It's annoying and slightly stupid, but not a mahoosive problem.

Just use examples ^ gave and if the police complain, listen and comply.

Someone...(Spangly? I don't remember) Is going to make little 'Anonymous thinks' 'we think' 'we believe' etc. stickers

WHAT IS THIS FAGGOTRY

tbh, those stickers will be comedy of themselves. The same sort of way Ian Hislop uses '... Allegedly' quite a bit on Have I Got News For You.

It's not like I'm gonna be forcing them on anyone. They'll be around if anyone wants to decorate their sign with a few of them (to remind the police and scientologists that having and expressing our opinions are both things protected by various bits of Human Rights law).

What's the worst case scenario? Nobody wants them? I'm sure I can deal with the disappointment, somehow.

copypasta from Racial and Religious Hatred Act 2006
29J Protection of freedom of expression

Nothing in this Part shall be read or given effect in a way which prohibits or restricts discussion, criticism or expressions of antipathy, dislike, ridicule, insult or abuse of particular religions or the beliefs or practices of their adherents, or of any other belief system or the beliefs or practices of its adherents, or proselytising or urging adherents of a different religion or belief system to cease practising their religion or belief system.

Also from the explanation notes on the same site:
http://www.uk-legislation.hmso.gov.uk/acts/acts2006/en/ukpgaen_20060001_en_1

16. New section 29J provides that the offences of stirring up religious hatred are not intended to limit or restrict discussion, criticism or expressions of antipathy, dislike, ridicule or insult or abuse of particular religions or belief systems or lack of religion or of the beliefs and practices of those who hold such beliefs or to apply to proselytisation, evangelism or the seeking to convert people to a particular belief or to cease holding a belief.

Only applicable to religions as far as I can see

When talking the Police on the day the 'they are not a religion' argument is probably too complex to argue. The point is you are allowed to protest against the actions of religious bodies and many people have called this one a cult.

that video has several key details wrong.

first it was the CITY OF LONDON police, not the METROPOLITAN police

the Met' havnt aired any concerns about signs etc with us as yet. infact they seem the most relaxed about it.

also the only mention made of vanning was to do with standard police protocol when taking details, etc. (such as the officer suspecting the details to be false, abuse being levelled at the officer, violence, etc)

As tempting as it is to have a sign saying 'SCIENTOLOGISTS DID 9/11' in retaliation to this, I think we really need to play this smart.

All the police on the ground at the major protests have acted professionally and treated us well. If we screw that up, it could put future protests/mini-raids at risk.

If we have signs targeting the organisation specifically (not beliefs) with evidence to back it up, carry a print out of laws pertaining to hate speech and freedom of assembly, comply with the law and have fun like always, we should be okay.

Do you think we could get away with the CHICKEN/CULT chant if beforehand someone said over the PA (for example) 'Justice Latey in the High Court of London, July 1984 stated that the Church of Scientology was a sinister cult'?

Anyway, here's a quote from the ruling:

Justice Latey, ruling in the High Court of London (July, 1984)
'Scientology is both immoral and socially obnoxious...It is corrupt sinister and dangerous. It is corrupt because it is based on lies and deceit and has its real objective money and power for Mr. Hubbard... It is sinister because it indulges in infamous practices both to its adherents who do not toe the line unquestionably and to those who criticize it or oppose it. It is dangerous because it is out to capture people and to indoctrinate and brainwash them so they become the unquestioning captives and tools of the cult, withdrawn from ordinary thought, living, and relationships with others.'

I suggest announcing Justice Latey's ruling at the beginning of each protest, like a disclaimer.

Once our evidence has been given, then anyone saying Cult is covered.

Definitely announce Justice Latey's ruling, it will, as said, cover our asses.

I am coming tomorrow with a big sign saying 'Scientology is an evil and dangerous cult'. If the police tell me to change it, I will refuse. If they want my details fine, but the sign will stay.

^^^ But make sure at the end of day, if it comes down to getting rid of the sign or being v&, comply with the law.

We need to address this, but it's better to liase with police to get this sorted. The hate-speech monitors are really just there so they can cover themselves.

I got threatened with a formal caution at QVS today (by that same policewoman) for a sign that said SCIENTOLOGY KILLS.

So it's not just 'cult.' She insisted the sign could incite religious hatred (after I had already been dancing round with it for an hour and a half).

It was a nice sign. I didn't make it, but I have the red marker of the person who did, and will bring it next time.

Yes i wasn't impressed with teh gayness of the city police. I'm sure someone must have recorded the statement they made at the time so we'll see what they have to say for themselves.
As for those of you bending over for the police to shaft you. Complying with what they say isn't the same as complying with the law. You fail

I want to suggest the best form of protest following last weekends events. Why dont we all take a nice flask of tea down onto the circle line at an appointed time. Maybe cucumber sandwiches.
